Short answer
PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone, usually supplied as the disodium salt) and CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10, usually supplied as ubiquinone) both sit in the mitochondrial-cofactor category, but as raw materials they behave like opposites. PQQ is a small, water-soluble, deeply coloured, very low-dose active — typically single-digit to low-double-digit milligrams per serving — so the formulation problems are blend uniformity, staining and assay basis. CoQ10 is a large, fat-soluble, heat-sensitive active used at tens to low hundreds of milligrams, so the formulation problems are fill volume, dispersion in water-based formats and a melting point low enough to matter in gummy and hot-fill processing. Choose on format, dose budget, colour tolerance and documentation — and compare cost per serving, never cost per kilogram, because the two sit at completely different inclusion levels.

Choose PQQ if…
- You need a mitochondrial-category active that costs almost nothing in fill volume — a stick pack, small capsule or an already-crowded blend where CoQ10’s dose would not fit.
- Your format is water-based — a drink powder, shot or liquid — and you would rather not build a lipid or emulsion system.
- You want a differentiated ingredient story in a category where CoQ10 is the default and consumer familiarity is already high.
- Your QA team is comfortable controlling a low-dose active with a documented pre-blend or trituration step.
Choose CoQ10 if…
- You need consumer recognition — CoQ10 needs no education, which shortens the retail and marketing path.
- Your format is a softgel or oil-based system, where a lipid-soluble active is an advantage rather than a problem.
- You want deep supply-chain availability and predictable multi-supplier pricing at commercial volume.
- Your label strategy calls for a visible, meaningful milligram number that consumers already know how to compare.
Consider a solubilised or stabilised format if…
- You are putting CoQ10 into a water-based or dry format — plain crystalline ubiquinone will not disperse or wet properly on its own.
- Your process runs above roughly 50 °C — melting CoQ10 can migrate and recrystallise, showing up as mottling, bloom or dose non-uniformity in the finished unit.
- You are dosing PQQ below about 20 mg into a large batch and need a documented dilution to protect blend uniformity.
- You need dispersion or absorption data as part of the buyer file. Absorption and dissolution data are supplied under buyer review and are labelled by evidence stage — we do not publish unlabelled multipliers.
Formulation notes for both cofactors
The dose gap is the whole decision. A 10–20 mg active and a 100 mg active create opposite problems: one risks segregation and under-dosing, the other risks fill volume, tablet weight and mouthfeel. Decide which problem your line is better equipped to control before you compare specifications.
CoQ10’s melting point is a process constraint, not a footnote. Melting in the region of 48–52 °C sits underneath common gummy-depositing and hot-fill temperatures. If your process crosses it, specify a grade built for that route and put finished-unit assay and appearance on the stability protocol.
Colour planning comes early for PQQ. A deep red powder at a few milligrams per unit still tints a pale base, and poor dispersion shows as visible specks. Build the base colour around the active rather than correcting late.
Confirm the basis before you compare quotes. PQQ quoted on a disodium-salt basis and PQQ quoted on a free-acid basis are not the same material at the same number; ubiquinone and ubiquinol are not the same material at the same number either. Two quotes that look identical routinely are not.
Documentation and how to verify
Request the same file set for both materials and read it the same way:
- COA with identity, HPLC assay, and the assay basis stated explicitly — salt vs free acid for PQQ, oxidised vs reduced form for CoQ10.
- Method summary — which related substances the assay method resolves, and against which reference standard.
- Production route — fermentation or synthesis — plus the manufacturing site and its quality-system certifications.
- US regulatory basis for the specific material, confirmed with your own regulatory team before you specify it. Do not assume one supplier’s status transfers to another supplier’s material.
- Heavy metals, microbiology, residual solvents and, where the source is botanical or fermentation-derived, the relevant contaminant screening.
- Particle size, bulk density, moisture and hygroscopicity notes — the data that actually predicts blending and filling behaviour.
- Stability data in a format close to yours, with finished-unit assay, not just powder-in-drum.

Frequently asked questions
Are PQQ and CoQ10 interchangeable in a formula?
No. They are different molecules with different solubility, different dose ranges and different specifications. PQQ is water-soluble and used at a low milligram level; CoQ10 is fat-soluble and used at tens to low hundreds of milligrams. Swapping one for the other changes the format, the fill volume and the file set.
What does “PQQ disodium salt” mean on a spec sheet?
It means the material is supplied as the sodium salt rather than the free acid. The free acid is roughly 88% of the disodium salt by weight, so a serving declared on a salt basis delivers less free-acid PQQ than the same number declared on a free-acid basis. Always confirm which basis the COA and the label calculation use.
What is the difference between ubiquinone and ubiquinol on a COA?
Ubiquinone is the oxidised form of CoQ10 and is the more common commercial powder; ubiquinol is the reduced form and is more sensitive to oxidation, so it is normally supplied in a protected or stabilised presentation. They assay differently and should never be treated as the same line item in a specification.
Which one is harder to put into a gummy?
CoQ10, in most cases. It is practically insoluble in water and melts in the region of 48–52 °C, which is below many depositing temperatures, so melting, migration and recrystallisation have to be designed around. PQQ’s difficulty is different — it is water-soluble and used at a very low level, so the risks are uniformity and colour rather than melting.
How should we compare the cost of the two?
On cost per serving at your actual label dose, not cost per kilogram. PQQ carries a high price per gram at a very low dose; CoQ10 a moderate price per gram at a much higher dose. Compared correctly, the gap is often far smaller than the per-kilogram quotes suggest.
